If South Korea is the worlds 3rd largest country in Bitcoin trading and the country in general is in a frenzy over cryptocurrency then why haven’t we seen or heard of any blockchain games coming from there? Well finally there is one that has just appeared on the gaming stage and is trying to break out, this is CryptoSaga! We had the fortunate chance to talk with their CEO, Yungi Jang about this current predicament and to find out more about their game.
1. Please introduce yourself and your company.
Hello, my name is YunGi Jang from FirstShrike games. We are an indie game development team that has been producing mobile games since 2009. The members for our team have been determined on a project-to-project basis and sometimes we have to outsource on certain contract terms with other game development companies. Our game CryptoSaga is a joint collaboration between First Shrike and the Mooonrabbit dev team who created FantasyxRunners.
2. Why did you change from always being a mobile app developer to now go into blockchain game development?
As a game developer we have always focused on the transparency and reliability with smart contracts and in recent years, there has been a huge interest in cryptocurrency in South Korea, in fact to the point where it is even causing an upheaval in our society. Moreover, I think with the success of the game Cryptokitties it has stimulated the interest of many game devs. So looking at these current situations we also believe that there is a possible market opportunity with blockchain games and we wanted to get in early into this new market.
3. Is there lot of competition in this area in Korea or would you say you are one of the first blockchain game companies?
You will find at this point, this industry right now has no competition and we are one of the first to market in South Korea. Comparing to the current cryptocurrency market boom blockchain gaming is still in it its infancy. Its either you use your own developed blockchain technology or some experimental blockchain technology and dApp but there is no one game dev company issuing the whole logic of blockchain they all use parts of it to build their full fledged game. We are the only ones using the main core of blockchain.
4. Please give us details about your game CryptoSaga?
CryptoSaga https://cryptosaga.io/ is an Ethereum based dApp game. Using an ethereum wallet and a dApp browser you can login to our site and play the game without registering. Basically for the gameplay you purchase heroes and you can build your own armies out from them then take the armies into dungeons to defeat monsters and explore further what’s in the depths of the dungeons.
5. Can you offer us any hints in playing the game?
At this point the most important thing is to always check the gas prices. We recommend using this website https://ethgasstation.info/ to help you set the appropriate gas prices throughout the game.
6. Are there any differences between the Korean and North American game development processes?
The biggest difference is the game classification rating system, one example are the age ratings. In Korea this process is legally enforced and to offer a videogame without going through the proper procedures is illegal. For us small game dev companies this is the most difficult barrier and that is why Korean users cannot play CyptoSaga right now. But we are in the classification process for this IP block Ethereum dapp and because it is such a new platform application it has been harder to classify to be legalized.
7. Do you have any information or tips about blockchain game programming you can share with other videogame developers?
This advice is for the new game devs who want try making a blockchain game. Games such as Crpytosaga, Crytpokitties and Etehremom are all decentralized applications. The front-end for them has no choice but to be centralized. For example in the storage of all the data in CryptoSaga like for fighting, etc. are all processed on the logic of the Ethereum blockchain. However the front-end related features associated with showing how this data are all processed are all in a centralized server based on the Amazon AWS infrastructure. I want emphasize that blockchain games are not a totally new thing its still based on a basic web program such as the Unity game engine and then adapting that in a different way to make the game work better as a blockchain game.
8. We see that you already partnered with WAX what was purpose for doing that?
So because Blockchain and dApps are in such an early stage our thought is creating an early partnership with a huge digital asset exchange company like Opskins then they can help introduce our game more with their enrolled marketing to the PC and console gamers.
9. What does the future hold for CryptoSaga and have planned for the coming times ahead?
Currently according to Dappradar, CryptoSaga has usually been placing either 3-4 places up and down in the dApp game market. CryptoSaga is still new in blockchain gaming market and our goal
is to further grow into the development and expansion of this market. Thank you!
