UBISOFT LAUNCHES ITS FIRST DIGITAL RABBIDS® COLLECTIBLES USING BLOCKCHAIN

Ubisoft becomes the first major video game publisher to leverage the technology to launch its truly unique tokens, with all proceeds to UNICEF

Paris, June 17, 2020 – Today, Ubisoft officially unveils a series of 55 unique “Rabbids” collectibles, as tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. As digital versions of unique Rabbids assets, they each have their own specific properties, design and value, and can be traded like game cards, using blockchain’s inherent abilities. All proceeds raised following token transactions will directly go to UNICEF as donations.

Created by Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab as a continuous experimentation of what blockchain technology can bring to players and the gaming industry, Rabbids Tokens are original as a collector’s experience. They are collectible, but players can’t resell nor keep them forever: they are ‘always-for-sale’, meaning that at any time, another player can nab one from its owner if they pay for its indicated value, in Ethers[1]. Former owners then receive a ‘Proof of Plausible Ownership’ (POPO), a token-certificate proving they once owned the Rabbids Tokens, so they can keep growing their collection.

Just like the Rabbids themselves, Rabbids Tokens are mischievous: they transform every time they get a new owner, sporting the look of a different animal. The most adventurous achievements hunters out there will want to be among the firsts to own all Rabbids variations, while paying particular attention to full moons’ effects on them. In addition to being the proud temporary owner of a Rabbids Token, players will benefit from their everlasting benevolence: each time they buy one, they automatically contribute to a good cause, with the amount of their transaction being directly proceeded to UNICEF’s cryptocurrency fund.

“This project successfully combines both Ubisoft’s endeavors in tech experimentation and tech for good. It gathers different ideas we have been working on at the Strategic Innovation Lab into a concrete and valuable use case”, said Anne Puck, Associate Director of Ubisoft’s Blockchain Initiative. “Donations are turned into something fun, virtual transactions have an impact in real life, and we use a peer-to-peer mechanics: money goes directly to UNICEF, there is no intermediary”.

Built on the ERC-721 Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) standard, Rabbids Tokens are fully interoperable, which means they could even be used in any other game accepting this widespread standard.
